Business Experience: The Journey so far...
In 1992 Peter Cuff and I set up the very successful accounting practice Cuff Booth-Ross. I guess my passion for business development began in those very early days as a Chartered Accountant. I always got a huge buzz seeing my clients do well, especially when I’d been involved in helping them get there.
The process of owning my own business taught me many valuable lessons which I refer to as "business knocks". As they either knock you into shape or knock you out of business. It’s because of these experiences that I can relate first hand to people in business. I have lived through the same business joys, pains, frustrations and challenges that they face every day.
Being privileged to see inside hundreds of businesses, I felt a mixture of astonishment and on occasions despair at the way some businesses operated. I also discovered there are several common things that differentiate a successful business from an unsuccessful business regardless of the industry that the business is in.
I knew then that I wanted to teach my clients these things and help them transform their businesses.
Before I embarked on a career in this field I decided I needed the experience of working in the corporate sector first. In 2003 I sold my share of the practice and joined the Westland Farm Centre as the Financial Accountant and Administrator.
"This was great role, I learned a lot about myself and the dynamics of working with and reporting to many different people, how different personalities interact or don’t, what works and what doesn't work in different circumstances and how to optimise the situation. It was a fantastic learning curve."
This gave me the opportunity to develop my IT skills considerably while also having been exposed to several different full accounting programs.
Finally towards the end of 2007 I considered I had gained enough experience. Together with my qualifications, business knowledge, skills and the strategies I’d learnt throughout the journey it was time to start helping people in business build better businesses so "Building Better Business" was born.
Life Experience: You can't scare me - I have children...
I have served two life sentences with my husband of 18 years and am currently into my third… with no time off for good behaviour... We have two wonderful children, a boy and a girl, Mitch aged 12yrs and Denva aged 10 years.
My kids inspire me, I’ve tried looking after them and it inspires me to work!!! No seriously I’m crazy about my kids. I always thought that children were supposed to learn from their parents but the reality is that I have learnt so much about life and myself, from them. The whole process of watching them grow and develop into amazing human beings and responsible members of society is totally fascinating.
I strongly believe in the healthy body, healthy mind philosophy. Your body is the epicenter of your universe. You go nowhere without it. If it's out of shape, it’s easy for other aspects of your life to follow suit. That's one of the reasons I became an aerobics instructor.
When you’re the teacher you have to attend the class... you can't make excuses not to go. Besides, its fun and an awesome way to stay in shape. I teach both Cross Train and Spin classes.
We don’t live in a vacuum so it's nice to put something back into the community. My contribution over the last few years has been teaching children to swim.
As a swimming coach, I teach 3 nights a week during the summer months. I serve on the Board of Trustees at St Mary’s School and have
done so for several years. At various times I've also coached and managed my son’s soccer team.
In my spare time like to chill out with my family and friends, I'm particularly partial to a nice chardonnay
..... but hey if you're out, then a Sauvignon Blanc will do.
